Nicolás’ work is distinguished not only by its quality but also by the way he experiments with several styles, methods or subjects. His work can be divided into: drawing, painting, and photography.
Photocollage
These constitute the most captivating part of Lekuona’s work. It is possible to see in these works, which are mainly produced between the years 1932 and 1935, that he was a talented photographer, artist, and poet. He decontextualises and associates objects freely, in a way which is closer to Surrealism than to Dadaism, Cubism or any other avant-garde movement. Basically, he worked in parallel on two main subject matters:
Montages of a social nature that allude to the proletarian class (workers and peasants) and to the topic of war. He rejected war symbols and capitalism.
More recreational and aesthetical works, related both to women and sports. One of the most recurrent lyrical motifs are the “subtle touches”, that is, the swift contact of two fingers that relate two forms.
