Además de por su calidad, la obra de Nicolás se caracteriza por la experimentación de diversos estilos, métodos y temas que podemos dividir en: dibujo y pintura, fotografía y fotocollage.

Debido al escaso desarrollo de la fotografía en la España de los años 20 y a la ausencia de escuelas, los jóvenes artistas debían formarse de manera autodidacta a través de las revistas de arte y las de cine, que se había convertido ya en una gran industria después de la I Guerra Mundial.

El joven  Nicolás estaba fascinado por el cine expresionista alemán con sus luces y sombras. Intenta resaltar las texturas de los objetos y utiliza a sus hermanos como modelos.

Nicolás  daba a sus fotografías el mismo valor que a sus dibujos y óleos. En 1932 presenta para una exposición muchas más fotografías que obras en cualquier otro formato.
